On a day while Americans watched their senators grapple with a presidential impeachment, during a pandemic no less, Bach Festival Society artistic director John Sinclair offered insight into the creation of the “Spiritual Spaces” program some five years ago.

His goal, Sinclair said Saturday evening, was “to create an aura of peace.”

“I thought we really needed that” back in 2016, when the first “Spiritual Spaces: Peace and Serenity” concert was announced, he said. “Now I know we need it more.”

There might not be enough soothing music in the world to calm the frayed nerves of most Americans at this point, but the Bach Festival Orchestra surely gave its all toward that goal during the first weekend of the 86th annual festival.
